Sam Altman finally said what a lot of people suspected. Some companies are blaming AI for layoffs that have nothing to do with AI. It’s a convenient excuse. Stock drops? AI. Restructuring? AI. Missed earnings? Definitely AI.
But here’s the twist—Altman also confirmed the scary part is real. Actual AI-driven job displacement? It’s on the way.
What Altman Actually Said
At the India AI Impact Summit last Thursday, the OpenAI CEO didn’t mince words. He estimated some percentage of current layoffs attributed to AI are basically fiction. Companies were going to cut those jobs anyway. AI just makes it sound futuristic instead of desperate.
Then he pivoted. Real displacement from AI? That’s happening too. Different jobs. Different timeline. But coming.
“We’ll find new kinds of jobs, as we do with every tech revolution,” Altman said. “But I would expect that the real impact of AI doing jobs in the next few years will begin to be palpable.”
Translation: The hype is half fake, half prophecy.
The Data Doesn’t Show Mass Layoffs—Yet
Here’s where it gets weird. For all the panic headlines, the actual employment data looks almost boring.
A National Bureau of Economic Research study published this month surveyed thousands of C-suite executives across the US, UK, Germany, and Australia. Nearly 90% said AI had zero impact on their workforce over the past three years. Nothing. Nada.
Yale Budget Lab crunched Bureau of Labor Statistics data through November 2025. They found no significant difference in unemployment length or occupation changes for workers in high-AI-exposure jobs. Martha Gimbel, the lab’s executive director, put it bluntly: “No matter which way you look at the data, at this exact moment, it just doesn’t seem like there’s major macroeconomic effects here.”

Why Companies Are ‘AI Washing’ Their Layoffs

Gimbel points out that companies facing squeezed margins, cautious consumers, and geopolitical headaches need a narrative. Blaming AI sounds a lot better than admitting strategic failures or market softness.
David Stout, CEO of WebAI, went further in a Fortune commentary. Tech founders are sitting on massive AI investments that haven’t paid off yet. They need to justify the burn rate. What better way than predicting massive labor disruption? It frames the technology as inevitable, transformative, world-changing—even when the balance sheet says otherwise.
This isn’t new. It’s classic “fake it till you make it” applied to workforce strategy.
The Other Side: When AI Job Losses Get Real
While some companies cry wolf, others are quietly building the actual wolf.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned of a “white-collar bloodbath,” predicting AI could wipe out 50% of entry-level office jobs. Not someday. Soon.
Klarna’s CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski announced his buy-now-pay-later firm will cut its 3,000-person workforce by one-third before 2030. He’s explicitly citing AI acceleration as the driver.
The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report found 40% of employers expect to reduce headcount due to AI. That’s not theoretical. That’s planning.
The J-Curve Problem
Apollo Global Management’s chief economist Torsten Slok sees a pattern repeating. He compares today’s AI moment to the 1980s PC boom. Back then, Nobel laureate Robert Solow famously observed that computers were everywhere except in productivity data.
Slok calls it the J-curve. Initial investment phase: lots of spending, little visible output. Then—suddenly—exponential returns.
“AI is everywhere except in the incoming macroeconomic data,” Slok wrote last week. But that lag might be ending.
Early Signals in the Noise
Stanford’s Erik Brynjolfsson thinks he sees the transition happening now. In a recent Financial Times op-ed, he pointed to something strange in the latest jobs report. Job gains got revised down to 181,000 while fourth-quarter GDP tracked up 3.7%. Growth without hiring. That’s unusual.
Brynjolfsson’s own analysis showed 2.7% year-over-year productivity growth last year. He attributes this to AI benefits finally “peeking through.”
His landmark 2025 study revealed something more troubling for young workers: early-career employees in high-AI-exposure jobs saw 13% relative employment decline. Experienced workers? Stable or growing.
“The updated 2025 U.S. data suggests we are now transitioning out of this investment phase into a harvest phase,” Brynjolfsson wrote, “where those earlier efforts begin to manifest as measurable output.”
What This Means for Workers
The landscape is splitting in two.
Entry-level positions—data entry, basic coding, content writing, customer service—face immediate pressure. These are the jobs AI handles competently today, not tomorrow.
Senior roles requiring judgment, relationships, and complex decision-making? Safer for now. Possibly safer long-term.
The uncomfortable truth: AI washing and AI displacement can coexist. Some companies use AI as a smokescreen. Others are actually replacing humans with algorithms. Telling the difference matters for anyone making career decisions.
The Bottom Line
Altman’s admission cuts both ways. Yes, some AI job loss narratives are corporate theater. But no, that doesn’t mean workers should relax.
The data says mass displacement hasn’t arrived yet. The technology says it’s coming. The J-curve suggests we’re approaching the inflection point where investment turns into impact.
For employees, the move is straightforward: assume the threat is real, build skills AI struggles with, and watch which companies are actually automating versus just talking about it.
The AI job apocalypse might be half hype today. But the other half? That’s already loading.
