The platforms themselves won’t make this distinction. Their business model rewards maximum engagement regardless of whether that engagement is healthy.
My recommendation: If you use AI companions, maintain conscious boundaries. Set usage limits. Ensure you’re maintaining real human relationships. Treat it like alcohol—moderate use by self-aware people is fine; unconscious dependency is dangerous.
The technology isn’t going away. It’s improving rapidly. By 2026, AI companions will be significantly more convincing, more emotionally intelligent, more difficult to distinguish from real relationships in day-to-day experience.
We need honest conversations about healthy use, ethical development, and societal implications before this technology becomes so sophisticated that we can no longer see its limitations clearly.
